Who Supports Legalizing Marijuana - and Who Doesn’t - in RI

Legislation has been introduced to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol in Rhode Island — so who supports legalization in the state, and who doesn’t?

RegulateRI’s Jared Moffat pointed to six of the ten Senate Judiciary committee members as being cosponsors of the legislation this year. Representative Scott Slater’s version in the House — and who the cosponsors will be there — is expected shortly.

Meanwhile, the group Sensible Approaches to Marijuana — a leading anti-marijuana group that touts former Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Bill Clinton’s drug Czar Gen. Barry R. McCaffrey as two of its board members — released a comprehensive report this week outlining what they say are a range adverse impacts to states that legalized the drug, including:

* Colorado now leads the country in past-month marijuana use by youth, with Washington in 6th place.
* Past-year use rates in both states are far outpacing the national average.
* Marijuana is now related to a record high of 33% of DUI cases in Washington state.
