Presidential historian Michael Beschloss spoke with GoLocalProv.com ahead of the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council annual dinner, where he talked about Donald Trump's presidency, prospects of impeachment — and why he likely won’t be penning a book on this current administration.

Recognized as a scholar of leadership, Beschloss serves as the NBC News Presidential Historian and is a contributing columnist to the New York Times.

When asked if he planned on writing about the Trump presidency, Beschloss responded that it would “probably not” be him.

“I tend to try and write about things as history — usually it takes 30 to 40 years before you can do that, when you have enough hindsight,” said Beschloss. “But it’s going to be absolutely fascinating how this play this out.”

“[And] there is no way of knowing [how historians will look back],” added Beschloss. “I find in history a lot of times, you try and predict what historians will say years later - and is true with every President — we would get it wrong. A President might make a decision that isn’t really noticed at the time, but later on prove to be very important. And the opposite is true as well."

Impeachment “Predictions”

Beschloss said there was no way he could say there could be any scenario in which Trump is removed from office.

“Historians aren’t too bad on talking on things as to what happened before — but we’re really not great on prediction,” said Beschloss.

“The issues concerned are different from what you’ve seen in different impeachments, for starters. This is trying to judge something from riding a galloping horse — I guarantee the way things look six weeks from now will look very different than the way it does tonight,” said Beschloss.

Beschloss spoke to what is currently taking place Internationally — which he sees as not having an impact on domestic politics.

“I think people are aware but how this is going to affect impeachment there’s not a particularly close link,” said Beschloss.
