Almeida’s lecture will discuss alternative uses for vacant mill buildings than that of luxury lofts.

"The trend of converting vacant mill buildings into luxury lofts is currently popular in post-industrial cities such as Pawtucket. Here, to name a few, there are the Slater Cotton Mill Lofts, the Riverfront Loft and American Wire loft complex, each of which are huge undertakings for the developer and yield lofts that generally start at 1000 dollars for a single bedroom," said the Preservation Society of Pawtucket in their press release.

Almeida will offer a counter-argument to the trend of converting the buildings to residential spaces, arguing that it creates a growing suburban problem of blight and abandonment.

He will ask the question, “is mill conversion helping rebuild a city through an influx of fresh blood, or creating a larger problem with gentrification?’

There will be a display with current examples and light refreshments provided.
