Congressman David Cicilline, the author of the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act issued the following statement.

Read the Statement Below

“This is a step in the right direction that will offer temporary protections to Liberian refugees. Nonetheless, we must do more by offering permanent legal status and a path to citizenship for Liberian refugees. That’s why I’ve introduced the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act.

Our country is stronger today because of the contributions of Liberian refugees who fled violence and disease in their home country over the last 25 years. Rhode Islanders know this more than most. Our Liberian community is filled with men and women who work hard, pay their taxes, serve in our Armed Forces, and contribute to the rich fabric of life in our state. It’s past time to give them a path to citizenship.”
