1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

Ethical reform of state government is the number one issue.  As I speak with hundreds of voters throughout District 52, the people are tired of public corruption.  As someone who has never served in public office, the string of recent controversies made me feel obligated to step forward and bring a fresh approach with many new ideas to reform state government.  I have never had political aspirations, but I feel it is my civic responsibility to try to fix a broken system.  I will advocate for much greater transparency at the State House, including reforms to the legislative grant system, an end to late-night Assembly sessions, and a line-item veto.  I will always conduct myself with the highest ethical standards and fight to change the failed policies of political insiders and career politicians.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

As a small businessman, I know that we need to develop a more business-friendly climate to improve the economy.  We are not going to attract new businesses that offer good-paying jobs to come to Rhode Island unless we create a better atmosphere for them to flourish.  This means we need to reduce the regulatory burden and the amount of red tape that businesses often face.  We need to lower business taxes and reduce costs for businesses, while at the same time becoming more welcoming to companies seeking to locate here.  As the owner and general manager of a fourth-generation small business farm, I know how difficult it is to survive.  It requires a lot of hard work and sacrifices, and placing regulatory burdens on the business community only discourages job growth.  Should I be elected, I will work to immediately address many of the tax policies and other factors that keep Rhode Island at or near the bottom of many business rankings.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The greatest challenge is creating job opportunities to keep young professionals in Rhode Island.  Most of my fellow college graduates were forced to leave the state to find decent-paying jobs.  Many of my friends have relocated to the Boston area or beyond because there are not enough good jobs here.  I know this is very upsetting to parents and grandparents who want their college graduates to remain in Rhode Island.  Should I be elected, I will advocate for college loan assistance programs for those students who commit to working and living here.  College graduates are currently facing record high interest rates on their college loans.  I will also fight to make certain that tuition is affordable at our three state colleges, and I will support appropriate funding for our students to be better trained for the type of jobs that Rhode Island companies need.  The General Assembly must do a better job of creating programs that will enable future generations to find good employment in Rhode Island.

4.  Why are you running for office?

I have always hoped to live my life in the same tradition as my family, through hard work, honesty, independence and commitment to the community.  Unfortunately, it often seems that leaders in our state have abandoned these traditions.  I want to make government work again for people who have built their lives on hard work, freedom and community.  I will not blindly follow the wishes of any party or leader.  Quite simply, I am running to make a difference.  My community and our state need a new direction, now more than ever.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration to help others comes from my great-grandfather, Adam Marszalkowski, who emigrated from Poland a century ago and founded Adams Farm, where I am now proud to serve as the general manager.  Adam and his brother fled to America as the only surviving members of a once large family after war and civil upheaval took the lives of his parents and other siblings.  Adam and his family built their lives on hard work.  He and his wife had 12 children that labored from dawn to dusk, rising early to milk the cows and ending the day tending to their crops.  Adam was able to build, through hard work and the blessings of freedom, a better life for his family in America.  I always strive to live my life in the same manner as my great-grandfather, and I will bring this work ethic that was instilled in me to make this state a better place to live and work.
