NEW: Lombardi Making Case for Next Majority Leader - and Would Be “Open to Speaker”

John Lombardi
State Representative John Lombardi is making a play for Majority Leader — and said he is “open to consideration” for Speaker of the House — should there be an opening.

Multiple sources told GoLocalProv.com that Lombardi, who is running unopposed as a Democrat in District 8, was openly discussing his political aspirations at a Rhode Island Working Families event in Providence on Tuesday night.

"I've said that I'm interested in majority leader, I’ve been very open about that. Obviously if there's an opening in leadership, I'd consider that," Lombardi told GoLocal on Wednesday of the Speaker's role. "But I'm not talking about that. Right now there's no opening for Speaker."

Current Majority Leader John DeSimone is waging a write-in campaign after having been defeated by Marcia Ranglin-Vassell in the Democratic primary in District 5 in Providence; Speaker of House Nicholas Mattiello is facing challenge from Republican Steve Frias in District 15 in Cranston.

Lombardi’s Leadership Roles

Lombardi, who had served as Providence City Council President and Interim Mayor of Providence between former Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci’s second conviction and David Cicilline’s election in 2002, was first elected to the House in 2012.

Sam Bell, the State Director for the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats of America, said he had heard of Lombardi’s interest in leadership roles, and weighed in on Lombardi’s chances in the event Mattiello is defeated.

"I haven't talked with many people about this, so I don't really know how they feel.  I think Lombardi would make a better Speaker than the current speaker, but we don't necessarily know [Mattiello] will win. I think he probably will," said Bell.

"I imagine Lombardi wouldn't be progressives' first choice, but I think he'd be far superior to the current speaker," Bell continued. "I liked his advocacy last year for working to fix the bus pass issue for low-income elderly and disabled RIPTA riders.  I was also encouraged that he stuck with [Representative Michael] Marcello to the end."

Marcello had previously challenged Mattiello for the Speakership after former Speaker of the House Gordon Fox resigned.

"There are still a few issues I disagree with [Lombardi] on," said Bell. "He's not pro-choice. That's an important Democratic priority--but I think probably a majority [of members of the Rhode Island House of Representatives] are anti-choice.  I think after the election that will still be a thin majority."

"I think he'd be a great improvement over the current speaker," said Bell. "I do think it's a bit too early to speculate."
