Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is now a "leading candidate" for Secretary of Commerce under President-elect Joseph Biden, according to a report.

Raimondo, who has been widely speculated to being considered for the Commerce post, is now a front-runner, Axios reported on Monday

"Why it matters," wrote Axios. "Raimondo, a Rhodes scholar who co-founded a venture capital firm in Rhode Island earlier in her career, has prioritized good relationships with the business community, the target audience of commerce."

"Biden had been considering a prominent CEO or a Republican to lead the Commerce Department," Axios continued. "In considering Raimondo, he appears to be moving to a more traditional choice."

Latest for Raimondo's Cabinet Aspirations

Raimondo has been considered as a candidate for Secretary of Health and Human Services, before declaring she was not going to be Biden's pick for that cabinet position.

The New York Times reported that "Labor Unions Blocked Raimondo’s Chances for HHS Secretary."
