Sam Zurier is running for State Senate in District 3. Here's what he has to say.

1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

I believe the biggest political issue in this campaign season in Rhode Island is the public’s dissatisfaction with our political process, which can expressed in different ways.  Some voters are dissatisfied because their issue has not been addressed with sufficient urgency and/or because their opponents are (in their view) stupid, unreasonable or acting in bad faith.  Other voters are dissatisfied with the polarization in our current politics that makes it hard for people to work together on policies of common interest because of their extreme views.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

Improve our public education system to increase the quality of our workforce and our future leaders.

Provide scholarships assistance to students in various fields important to our economy (education, medicine, business degrees and others) that are tied to their staying in Rhode Island after they graduate.

Improve our infrastructure that supports business (e.g. Port of Providence, Quonset, airport)

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

Creating and sustaining institutions that allow every Rhode Islander a fair opportunity to realize the American Dream (a healthy standard of living, a rewarding career, a feeling of belonging and participation within society, etc.)

4.  Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?

I find it personally rewarding to contribute my thoughts and efforts to improving our State.  I do not believe myself to be uniquely qualified, but it is my hope that the voters will find my efforts sufficiently valuable to vote for me to return to office next year.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

Barack Obama.  I found (and continue to find) his message of “Yes, we can” to be an inspiration.  I also admire his talent in placing some of America’s darkest moments in a narrative of our nation’s history of shared commitments and ultimate progress.
