The Hall of Fame Class

Ronald Machtley is originally from Pennsylvania.  He received his B. S. degree from the US Naval Academy and his service in the Navy brought him to Rhode Island.

He ran for Congress in 1988 and won in an upset victory over Democrat Congressman, Ferdinand St. Germain.  He went on to serve 2 more terms, leaving Congress to run for Governor in a primary against Lincoln Almond, who prevailed.  He is currently the President of Bryant University, where he has served for 17 years.

Lila Sapinsley got involved in politics as a supporter of John Chafee and ended up running for the Rhode Island Senate, originally as an Independent.  She won and soon after changed her affiliation to Republican. She was elected the first female Senate Minority Leader.

After running unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor, she served on the RI Housing and Mortgage Finance Corporation and the Public Utilities Commission.

Fred Lippitt was a member of a political family that dates back to colonial times.  He enlisted in the US Army at the beginning of World War II and served in the Pacific theatre.  As a result of his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Lippitt was a lifelong Republican and served for 11 terms in the RI House of Representatives, including 10 years as the Minority Leader.  He ran three times for Mayor of Providence against Buddy Cianci, once as a Republican and twice as an Independent, losing in the last two races by less than 320 votes.  When Cianci  was removed from office, Lippitt ran again against Joseph Paolino, who was serving as Acting Mayor. He lost by 129 votes.  He served as Director of Administration and as a Housing Court Judge, as well as serving as trustee for many local charities and colleges.

Norma Willis has served Rhode Island in numerous elected and appointed offices.

She was elected to the North Kingstown School Committee from 1953-1973. She also served on the Board of Regents, before serving four terms in the  RI House of Representatives from 1981-1989.

She was Republican State party Chairman in 1990 -1992 and topped off her long and distinguished service with a stint on the Jamestown Town Committee in 2001.
