Flanders Calls for "Stiff Sanctions" on China Following Hack at NUWC
As was first reported by the Washington Post, “Chinese government hackers have compromised the computers of a Navy contractor, stealing massive amounts of highly sensitive data related to undersea warfare — including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020, according to American officials.
The breaches occurred in January and February, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The hackers targeted a contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military organization headquartered in Newport, R.I., that conducts research and development for submarines and underwater weaponry.”

China's continued theft of proprietary technology from our defense industry is, to be crystal clear, illegal, and a grave national security threat. The latest revealed hack by the Chinese government stole a trove of highly sensitive data on undersea warfare, including advanced submarine manufacturing, an industry critically important to the Rhode Island economy, to the security of our oceans, and to the defense of our homeland and ports. China's government hackers could not have hit closer to home in targeting a contractor that works with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, R.I. Our President is right, we need to impose stiff sanctions on key Chinese economic industries and send a powerful message that this continued action by the Chinese government is more than intellectual property theft, but a national security threat that will be responded to in kind.
