Elizabeth Roberts: The state’s outgoing Lieutenant Governor will be staying in public life and in the public eye as she has been selected to become the state’s next Director of Health and Human Services under Governor Gina Raimondo. Once a gubernatorial hopeful, don’t be surprised to see Roberts once again run for high office in Rhode Island in upcoming election cycles.
Jeff Padwa: The city solicitor under Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, who oversaw the successful legal defense of several high profile cases during his tenure, has been appointed Deputy Treasurer and Chief Legal Council to the RI Treasury by State Treasurer-elect Seth Magaziner. Padwa, an early supporter and fundraiser of President Barack Obama, has also achieved some tremendous physical feats—he’s an ultra-marathoner who has run races in excess of 50 miles!
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTMemory of Lila Sapinsley: The late Republican State Senator and Minority Leader, who passed away this week, was a trailblazer for women in politics who helped open the door for future female leaders to run for public office. Sapinsley set a classy example for future leaders throughout her life and will be missed in The Ocean State.
RIBBA: Lisa Ranglin, the President of the Rhode Island Black Business Association, has spoken out against practices at the 195 land that would effectively exclude minority contractors from gaining the work. Ranglin is right to point out that a level playing field must be enforced in all development in the state of Rhode Island.
Bob Unger: The top editor of the New Bedford Standard-Times, which is owned by Gatehouse Media, the company that owns The Providence Journal, set an example for bosses all across corporate America, he truly put the company first. When he saw that he needed to make cutbacks to balance the budget, he eliminated his own position for the betterment of the company. Will Providence Journal editors follow his lead in the future?
Friars Men’s Soccer: The Providence College Men’s Soccer team has made it to the final four this weekend – and fans of basketball know that’s major an accomplishment. Best of luck to the Friar team that features local kids Rob Bialy of East Greenwich, and Dominik Machado of Attleboro as they take on UCLA on Friday, at 7:30—watch them on ESPNU.
Not
Gina Raimondo: It was encouraging to see Raimondo take an about-face and reverse her decision to hold prevent the press from covering her economic summit. However, the news harkened back memories of the fact that Raimondo has refused to make public the hedge fund contracts that the state pension fund has entered into. (Will Treasurer-elect Seth Magaziner make them public?)
Rolling Stone Magazine: Rolling Stone is rightfully under serious fire after having run a far-fetched story about an alleged rape at the University of Virginia, without doing basic research or fact checking. It’s unfortunate that Rolling Stone made such egregious errors, because the publication has done some valuable reporting about the financial crises and its causes when Matt Taibbi was on a tear.
RI Tourism Spending: Golocalprov.com’s Stephen Beale reports that RI spends very little money to promote tourism when compared to other states. That could very well help explain our high unemployment rate considering how important tourism has become to our economy.
Jonathan Gruber: The MIT Professor, who has helped several states, including RI, (how much money did he get for that?) implement Obamacare, is under fire for his comments that the law was passed due to the lack of transparency surrounding it, and the stupidity of the American voter. Those comments were obviously not very wise, and shown the elitism that permeates some of the nation’s well-respected higher education establishments.
RI Planning Council: The state planning council, which has proposed the highly controversial RhodeMap planning document, held a meeting on the issue on Thursday, but had to prevent scores of people who sought to attend the meeting from entering because the room was too small. So let’s get this straight: the people who want to plan the state didn’t even have the foresight to book a big enough room?
Parole Office: It doesn’t matter where this office is located; the people who live or do business near it aren’t going to be very happy. Last year, the business community was up in arms when there were plans to locate this downtown, now the Native American Community is rightly irked over plans to locate the office near it’s office building on Broad Street.
