Patriots Rally Falls Short
The Patriots trailed 37-21 to start the fourth quarter after New York's Aldrick Rosas kicked a 27-yard field goal to open the quarter.
From that point, the Patriots rallied to take the lead.
Brissett capped off a nine play, 79-yard drive with a four yard run into the endzone to cut the Giants lead to 37-28 following the extra point by Stephen Gostkowski.
On the Patriots next possession, Brissett found Jacob Hollister for a four yard touchdown pass, cutting New York's lead to 37-35 following a Gostkowski extra point.
Brissett would lead one more scoring drive that would end with a Gostkowski 55-yard field goal with 44 seconds left to give the Patriots a 38-37 lead.
However, the defense would not be able to hang on.
The Giants went on a seven play, 45-yard drive in 44 seconds ending with a Rosas 44-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to give New York the 40-38 win.
Next up
The Patriots open up their 2017 regular season on Thursday, September 7 when they host the Kansas City Chiefs at Gillette Stadium.
Kick off is set for 8:30 p.m.

5 Takeaways From the Patriots 40-38 Preseason Loss to the Giants
Cyrus Jones Injury
Cornerback Cyrus Jones went down in the second quarter with a non-contact knee injury.
Jones was in coverage down near the sideline when his knee gave out while chasing a New York's Travis Rudolph. He did not return to the game.
He will have an MRI on Friday morning.
If Jones is out for any length of time, the Patriots will need to come up with a replacement kick/punt returner.
Danny Amendola has done it before, Dion Lewis has also seen time returning kicks and punts in training camp and preseason.
Brandin Cooks and Patrick Chung have also returned punts and kicks in their career.
Jacoby Brissett
Jacoby Brissett started and played the entire game for the Patriots.
In the game, Brissett completed 27 of 35 passes for 340 yards and four passing touchdowns and another rushing touchdown. He had one interception early in the game.
With less than two minutes to play, Brissett led the Patriots on seven play 32-yard drive resulting in a Stephen Gostkowski 55-yard field goal to put the Patriots up 38-37 in the game.
Brissett also led scoring drives of 14 and 12 plays respectively.
Patriots Defense
Geneo Grissom had a sack of Giants quarterback Geno Smith in the first quarter, but overall the Patriots second string defense looked shaky.
New England gave 34 points in the first half before just allowing two field goals in the second half.
The Patriots have been hurt by injuries this preseason and are short on depth on the front seven.
Austin Carr
Undrafted rookie Austin Carr is in a battle to make the team at one of the final roster spots.
In the final preseason game, Carr had three catches for 48 yards and one touchdown.
One player that Carr could be battling with for a final receiver spot is Devin Lucien. Lucien hauled in five passes for 96 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Roster Cuts
All NFL rosters must be down to 53 players by Saturday, September 2 at 4 p.m.
Roster cut rules changed this season.
The NFL decided to go to one cut from 90 to 53 players, as opposed to two separate cuts like they have done in previous years.
When cuts are final, teams can claim players who have been waived by other teams until noon on Sunday.
Teams are allowed to keep 10 men on the practice squad.
