Chiefs Storm Back in 4th Quarter to Beat 49ers in Super Bowl 31-20

Chiefs win the Super Bowl
The Kansas City Chiefs rallied from ten points down in the fourth quarter to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV on Sunday night in Miami.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP.

"I knew we weren't in the ideal situation. I believed in my defense to get stops, and they did. Then the guys kept believing in me and kept making plays downfield, and we found a way to win,” said Mahomes after the game.

Chiefs Storm Back

Trailing 20-10 in the fourth quarter, Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce for a one-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-17 with 6:13 left to play in the game.

The touchdown was sparked by a Mahomes pass to a wide-open Tyreek Hill on 3rd and 15 to keep the drive alive.

Later in the quarter after the 49ers offense went three and out, the Chiefs drove 65 yards on seven plays ending with a Mahomes five-yard pass to running back Damien Williams for a touchdown, giving Kansas City a 24-20 lead with just 2:44 to play in the game.

The 49ers would get the ball back with all three timeouts and just over 2:30 to play in the game.

However, former Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would overthrow wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders on third down, and then get sacked on fourth and ten from the Kansas City 49-yard line.

On the Chiefs ensuing possession, Mahomes would hand the ball to Williams who would run 38 yards for a touchdown to give the Chiefs a 31-20 lead.

The 49ers would not threaten in the final minute of the game as the Chiefs would close out the game.

Garoppolo's Night

Garoppolo completed 20- of 31 passes for 219 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the game.

He finished with a quarterback rating of 69.2.

Garoppolo was drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft and backed up Tom Brady in two Super Bowls.

He was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers in October of 2017 for a second-round draft pick.
