The Patriots will now face the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl on February 3.

Patriots Win it in OT

Tied at 31, the Patriots won the coin toss to start the overtime period, needing a touchdown to win the game and not give the Chiefs possession back.

On New England’s overtime drive, quarterback Tom Brady converted on 3rd and ten three different times to keep the possession alive.

The first came on third and 10 from New England’s own 25-yard line, when Brady connected with Julian Edelman for 20 yards to the Chiefs’ 45-yard line.

The second time came on 3rd and ten from the Chiefs 45 when Brady once again connected with Edelman for 15 yards to the Kansas City 30-yard line.

The third and final time came on third and ten from the Chiefs 30-yard line when Brady hit tight end Rob Gronkowski over the middle for 15 yards.

Three plays later, Brady handed it to Rex Burkhead for the game-winning two-yard touchdown run to send the Patriots to the Super Bowl.

Brady finished the game completing 30 of 46 passes for 348 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Burkhead had 12 rushes for 41 yards and two touchdowns.

Patriots Can’t Hold on in Regulation

The Patriots trailed 28-24 with two minutes to play in the game after Kansas City’s Damien Williams ran in a touchdown from two-yards out.

On the Patriots final possession of regulation, Brady appeared to throw a game-ending interception, but it was called back after the Chiefs’ Dee Ford was flagged for being offside.

The Patriots then proceeded to finish the six-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run by Rex Burkhead to take a 31-28 lead with 39 seconds to play.

However, the Patriots defense was unable to hold up.

The Chiefs drove down the field and tied the game with a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Road Woes No More

Entering the game, a major storyline was the Patriots road struggles this season.

New England went 3-5 on the road, their worst record since the 2009 season.

The record included losses to Jacksonville, Detroit, Tennessee, Miami, and Pittsburgh - all teams that did not make the playoffs.

The losses resulted in the Patriots having to play the AFC Championship on the road.

Sunday's road win marks New England's fourth road victory of the season.

It is also their first road playoff win since the 2006 season.
