The New England Patriots signed Massachusetts native and former second-round pick Obi Melifonwu on Monday to bolster their secondary.

“Just would like to say thank you to the Patriots for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing organization,” said Melifonwu on his Twitter account.

The signing comes one day after the Patriots defense played arguably their best game of the season on Sunday night, holding the Green Bay Packers to just 17 points.

About Melifonwu

Melifonwu is a 6’3” safety from Grafton, Massachusetts.

He was drafted in the second round (56th overall) out of the University of Connecticut by the Oakland Raiders in 2017.

However, to this point, his career has been plagued by injuries.

In his career, Melifonwu has appeared in just five games, one of which he started, and then spent ten weeks on injured reserve with knee and hip injuries.

The Raiders released him on October 23.

The Patriots safety group now includes Melifonwu, Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duran Harmon, and Nate Ebner.
