UPDATED: Patriots Overcome Early Turnovers, Beat Bears 38-31

James White had two touchdowns in the game
The New England Patriots overcame early turnovers en route to a 38-31 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

"Give them credit. They fought to the end and they made some plays when they needed to, and, you know, but for us, I think we all feel pretty good about a win and rest up and get ready for a Monday night game," said Patriots quarterback Tom Brady after the game.

The win is New England’s first road win of the season and moves them to 5-2 overall.

Patriots Hold Off Bears

With the game tied at 24 late in the third quarter, New England’s Dont’a Hightower blocked a Chicago punt and Kyle Van Noy picked it up and returned it 29 yards to the end zone to give New England the lead 31-24 with 5:53 left in the quarter.

To start the fourth quarter the Patriots defense would create a turnover of their own when defensive back Jonathan Jones picked off Chicago quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to give New England the ball back.

On the Patriots ensuing possession Patriots quarterback Tom Brady led the offense on a nine-play 96-yard drive sparked by a Josh Gordon 55-yard catch and run to set the Patriots up in the red zone.

Brady then found James White on a quick shovel pass to put the Patriots up 38-24 following a Stephen Gostkowski extra point.

Brady finished the game with 25 completions for 277 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bears would pull within one score when Trubisky found Trey Burton in the end zone to make the score 38-31.

Chicago would get one more possession in the game with just 24 seconds left to play.

Trubisky launched a hail mary to the end zone and it was caught by Chicago's White one-yard short of the endzone.

Turnovers Put Patriots in Early Hole

With the Patriots leading 7-0, the Bears got on the board with a field goal by Cody Parkey to make the score 7-3 in the first quarter.

On Chicago’s ensuing kick off, New England’s Cordarrelle Patterson fumbled the return giving the Bears the ball back at the Patriots 24-yard line.

Five plays later, Trubisky ran it in from eight yards out to give Chicago a 10-7 lead following a Parkey extra point.

On the Patriots next offensive possession, running back Sony Michel fumbled to give the Chicago the ball back at the Patriots 36-yard line early in the second quarter.

Michel injured his knee on the play and would not return to the game.

Nine plays later, Chicago’s Jordan Howard would run it into the end zone to give the Bears a 17-7 lead following a Parkey extra point.

In total, Chicago sacred 14 points off of Patriots turnovers.
