Patriots Overcome Offensive Struggles to Beat Bills 25-6

Stephen Gostkowski lifts Patriots to win over Buffalo
Despite scoring only one offensive touchdown, the New England Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills 25-6 on Monday night in Buffalo.

“Today was the usual tough battle here in Buffalo as always. They do a great job, coach McDermott has a very good fundamental team, they made us grind it out, grind out every yard, made it hard to get the ball in the end zone. They played aggressively, they played hard. Fortunately, we were able to make a couple of plays in the second half,” said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick after the game.

The win improves the Patriots to 6-2 on the season, while the Bills fall to 2-6 overall.

Offensive Struggles

After scoring at least 38 points in each of the last four games, the Patriots offense scored just one offensive touchdown against Buffalo.

The struggles mostly came in the red zone or just outside of it as, for the most part, the Patriots offense was able to move the ball between the 20s.

“We were just kinda moving it down the field and when we got into the red area we just couldn’t get the ball in the end zone, just not enough positive plays down there. We had a couple of opportunities that we just didn’t take advantage of. I think if we score those touchdowns, we feel a lot better,” said Brady after the game.

In the first quarter, New England drove 73 plays on 15 plays, but settled for a Stephen Gostkowski 25-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Patriots offense drove 58 yards in 11 plays, but settled for a Gostkowski 40-yard field goal to go up 6-0.

With 5:42 left in the half, the Patriots offense drove 42 yards on eight plays and settled for a Gostkowski 38-yard field goal to go up 9-0.

The Bills would get a field goal of their own with 1:39 to play in the half to cut New England’s lead to 9-3.

The Patriots would take that lead into the half.

In the third quarter,  the Bills would cut the Patriots lead to 9-6 after kicker Stephen Hauschka nailed a 51-yard field goal with 7:39 to play in the frame.

Later in the quarter, the Patriots offense got the ball back following a Buffalo fumble just outside the Bills 20-yard line.

However, New England failed to score a touchdown, settling for a 25-yard Gostkowski field goal to go up 12-6.

It was the first time that New England failed to score a touchdown through three-quarter of a game in which Brady played the entire time since week two of the 2012 season.

The New England offense finally broke through in the fourth quarter when James White finished off a 10 play, 85-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Patriots up 18-6.

The Patriots went for two, but the conversion failed.

Defense Seals Win

The win was sealed by the Patriots defense.

With 5:54 to play and the Patriots still leading 18-6, safety Devin McCourty intercepted a pass from Buffalo quarterback Derek Anderson and returned it 84 yards to the end zone to put the Patriots up 25-6 following a Gostkowski extra point.

It was the Patriots first defensive touchdown since week 17 of the 2015 season. They went 40 games without one.

“I think we all kind of knew what was coming, me talking to Patrick Chung before the play, trying to show one thing and then jumping the route and trying to get into the end zone knowing that it was a play that we really needed,” said McCourty in his post-game press conference.

Overall, the Patriots defense held the Bills to just six points on two field goals and forced two turnovers.
