Former WNBA player and four-time NCAA All-American Cindy Blodgett has been named Lincoln School’s head varsity basketball coach. She is one of the greatest athletes in New England history.

She will take over for current head coach Jamal Shipman, who will step down at the end of this season.

"I'm excited and humbled to have the opportunity to lead Lincoln’s basketball program next year. I believe I can utilize my past experience to enhance the program. Lincoln attracts high achievers that excel in all areas of life, and here academics and athletics are so intertwined. We will build the program with competitiveness and a team-first focus, and look forward to being active members and leaders within the Lincoln community and beyond,’ said Blodgett.

Blodgett, who is head of the Physical Education Department at Lincoln School, will start at the beginning of the 2019-2020 season.

She will also host the Hoop Like a Girl Basketball Clinic in early April for Rhode Island and Massachusetts basketball players in Grades 6–12, held at Lincoln’s Boss McLoughlin Gym.

Blodgett will also run three sessions of basketball camp this summer, providing opportunities for players of all levels.

About Blodgett

Blodgett, who came to Lincoln School in August 2018 after 16 years in the collegiate basketball coaching ranks, had an exceptional playing career at the University of Maine, scoring 3,005 points—one of the 18 school records she still holds—from 1994–1998.

She led the UMaine Black Bears to four consecutive America East championships, and their first four NCAA tournament appearances. A four-time All-American, Blodgett was just the second player in Division I women’s basketball history to lead the nation in scoring for four consecutive seasons, and this past August, her impact on the school, the state, and the sport was acknowledged with her induction into Maine’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

After concluding her collegiate career, Blodgett, who graduated in 1998 with a B.S. in elementary education, was selected by the Cleveland Rockers in the first round of the 1998 WNBA draft.

She played there for one season before being traded to the Sacramento Monarchs, where she played until 2001. She also competed internationally in South Korea and France.

She began her coaching career in 1999 as an assistant coach at Boston University, and followed that up as an assistant at Brown University.

In 2007, Blodgett was named the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at her alma mater, and she led the Black Bears for four years before moving on to serve as an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island and returning to Boston University as an assistant and associate head coach.
