NEW: URI Soccer Falls to UConn 4-3 in Overtime in NCAA Tournament

The University of Rhode Island men's soccer team fell 4-3 in overtime to the UConn Huskies in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon. 

URI finishes the season with a record of 15-5, while UConn advances to play Indiana in the second round.

With the game tied at three and 1:03 left in overtime, UConn freshman Ibrahima Diop found the back of the net on a header to send the Huskies to a 4-3 win. 

The goal was Diop's third of the game. 

URI Can't Hold On in Regulation 

Leading 2-1at the half, URI added to their lead in the second half when Chae Brangman found the back of the net off of a centering pass from Stavros Zrokostas to put the Rams up 3-1.

The goal was Brangman’s seventh of the season.

Connecticut would cut Rhode Island’s lead to one when Diop blasted a shot past URI goalkeeper Roger Penske with 14 minutes left to go in the game.

Just six minutes later, Diop scored again for UConn, this time in the 80th minute to tie the game at three.

Rams Win A-10 Title

URI advanced to their 12th NCAA Tournament after beating George Mason 2-0 in the A-10 Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

The conference title is the seventh in URI’s history and gave them their 15th win of the season.

Rhode Island made the tournament for the first time since 2006 when they advanced to the second round and lost to Lehigh in penalty kicks.

Rhode Island's best run in the tournament came in 2000, when they beat Georgia State 4-3 in overtime in a play-in game, then beat Boston College in the first round.
