NEW: Revis Leaves Patriots To Sign With Jets

Darrelle Revis is gone after one year in New England
The New England Patriots allowed Darrelle Revis to become a free agent and hit the open market by not picking up a team option for 2015. That was expected. They did not expect to lose Revis to the team he began his career with, and AFC East rivals the New York Jets.

Per reports from Revis’ agents, Schwartz & Feinsod, he has agreed to terms with the New York Jets. Early reports indicate that Revis has signed a deal that will get him more than $40 million guaranteed. Revis spent the first six seasons of his NFL career in New York, registering 19 interceptions.

According to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, the new contract will make Revis the highest paid cornerback in NFL History. That report received additional information from Jason Cole of Bleacher Report. Cole reported that Revis signed a 5-year $70 million deal with $39 million fully guaranteed. Revis will receive $33 million of that money in the first two years of the contract. Revis leaves the Patriots following his first trip to a Super Bowl and his first Super Bowl championship in his storied career. He will join Buster Skrine, another free agent signing of the Jets on Tuesday, the first day of free agency.

Revis was not the only member of the Patriots defensive backfield to leave in free agency. The Patriots also declined the roster option on Brandon Browner on Tuesday, meaning both starting cornerbacks from the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory are no longer with the team. Browner has not yet signed with a team. The Patriots also saw Shane Vereen and Jonathan Casillas sign free agent deals with the New York Giants. The Patriots also did not sign Brian Tyms back to the team.

The Patriots did have some players stay with the team on Tuesday as James Devlin, Sealver Siliga and James Morris all signed back with the team. The Patriots also agreed to a 1-year deal with free agent wide receiver Brandon Gibson.

The Patriots were finally connected to free agent pass rusher Jabaal Sheard, who was on a visit to Foxboro on Tuesday night.
