Team Alvimedica Wins Ninth Leg of Volvo Ocean Race

Team Alvimedica, which is led by Charlie Enright of Bristol, has won the ninth and final leg of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. The leg began in Lorient, France and finished in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The victory also marked Team Alvimedica’s first leg win of the competition and put them in a tie on 34 points for fourth place with MAPFRE of Spain. The deadlock will be broken by the overall In-Port Race standings when the final In-Port race takes place on June 27 in Gothenburg.

While Team Alvimedica won the final leg of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing comfortably won the competition with 24 points.

A Special Moment

Team Alvimedica had previously reached the podium on three separate occasions, but their victory marked the first time a U.S.-flagged boat won a leg since PUMA Ocean Racing did so in May of 2012.

“This [win] really proves that anything is possible,” said Mark Towill of Team Alvimedica. "Three years ago we were at the finish of this race watching and couldn’t have imagined this. It just shows…with a dream and a lot of hard work, anything is possible. It’s been an amazing journey to sail around the world.”
