URI & Bryant Golf Coaches Set to Enter RI Golf Hall of Fame

Former URI golf head coach Tom Drennan and Bryant University Golf Coach Charlie Blanchard will be inducted into the Rhode Island Golf Association (RIGA) Hall of Fame on Tuesday, December 1st at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, the organization announced. Drennan retired from URI in 2011, while Blanchard is in his fifth season at Bryant.

In 22 years as the URI head coach, Drennan led the Rams to five A-10 championships, 10 New England Intercollegiate championships and seven New England Division I titles.

During his tenure, the Rams competed in 13 NCAA Regional Tournaments and one NCAA Championship. URI golfers earned individual entries into the NCAA Regionals on three separate occasions. 

During his career, Drennan was named A-10 Coach of the Year twice, New England Coach of the Year eight times as well as Rhode Island Men's Sports Coach of the Year twice. 

Drennan was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007, after being voted in by his peers. 

Charlie Blanchard

Charlie Blanchard is one of the top amateur golfers in New England and will enter the Hall of Fame as a player. 

Blanchard is a six time Rhode Island Golf Association Player of the Year selection and won the R.I. Amateur Championship in 2002. Also in 2002, Blanchard won all five Rhode Island major tournaments and was named New England Player of the Year by the New England Golf Journal. 

Blanchard has won seven R.I. Mid-Amateur Championships in his career, the most recent ones coming in 2009 and 2010, won four R.I. Stroke Play Championships, the most recent one coming in 2011, and has taken home five titles at the John P. Burke Memorial Championship.

Other inductees include Helen Waterhouse Palmer, Michael Bobel, Joseph Prisco and James Tanner.

RIGA 

Founded in 1902, the Rhode Island Golf Association is a non-profit organization of public and private clubs and courses dedicated to the game of golf. 

RIGA is presently made up of 49 member clubs and the Association is operated by an Executive Committee and Operating Committee.
