URI Cruises Past Bryant 97-63 in Season Opener

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team cruised past in-state rival Bryant 97-63 on Tuesday night in their season opener at the Ryan Center. 

The win is the first of head coach David Cox's career and gives URI a 1-0 start on the season. 

“I really enjoy coaching, I enjoy competition and I was locked into the game tonight. Not necessarily it being my first game or anything like that, I just wanted to come out her and be better than we were before, and I think we achieved that," said Cox after the game.

URI Cruises Past Bryant

The Rams opened the game on an 11-0 run led by freshman Fatts Russell, who scored eight of URI’s first 11 points.

After the Bulldogs pulled to within five, 23-18, Rhode Island would go on a 9-2 run to take.a 32-20 lead after a Ryan Preston free throw went down.

The Rams would take a commanding 49-32 lead into the half.

In the second half, Bryant would not get within single digits as URI would build as much as a 38 point lead and cruise to the win.

Rhode Island was led by Russell, who scored 21 points on 6 of 15 shooting from the field.

Jeff Dowtin and Christion Thompson added 17 and 14 points respectively.

Next Up 

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, November 13 when they visit the College of Charleston. 

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
