Akele Leaves URI Basketball to Play Professionally in Italy

Nicola Akele is leaving URI to play in Italy
URI basketball senior Nicola Akele will not return to the program in 2018-19 after signing a professional contract with Italy’s Roseto Sharks.

“Nicola has played a significant role for our program over the last three years, and he contributed to a pair of Atlantic 10 titles. While we are sorry to see him leave, we wish him nothing but the best as he moves on to the next phase in his career,” said URI head coach David Cox in a statement.

Akele, who is from Italy, will play in the Series A2 league for the Sharks, who went 7-26 last season.
