Big Brothers Big Sisters Names Two to Board of Directors

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State (BBBSOS) has appointed two new members to its Board of Directors. 

The two new members are Angela Carr and David Fontes. 

“Both Angela and David exemplify the essence of community and bring experience and expertise to the table.  It is great to have them on Board as we continue to create positive change for youth throughout Rhode Island,” said executive director Katie Afonseca.

Angela L. Carr

Carr is a partner in Barton Gilman LLP’s Providence office, is an experienced civil litigator, focusing her trial practice on professional liability defense, employment law, and business litigation. She regularly provides risk consulting for hospitals and practice groups. In addition to her recent appointment to the BBBSOS Board of Directors, Carr serves on the President’s Council at Providence College, and on the Board of Directors of the Providence College Providence Alumni Club, the Defense Counsel of Rhode Island and the Manton Avenue Project.  

 “It is a privilege to join the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State and to serve this outstanding organization in its mission to empower Rhode Island’s youth through mentoring,” said Carr.

David Fontes
Fontes is a principal for Blum Shapiro in Cranston, holds over twelve years of public accounting experience providing tax, assurance and consulting services to clients involved in manufacturing, distribution, gaming/lottery, financial and other services, real estate, jewelry and precious metals industries, many with international operations. 

He directs and performs specialized engagements for clients such as litigation support, financial projections, forensic analysis and various agreed-upon procedures projects.  David serves on the firm’s Manufacturing, Distribution and Retail Delivery Committee as well as on BBBSOS’ Finance Committee.

 In 2015, Fontes was named a Top 10 Public Accounting Professional Rising Star by The National Academy of Public Accounting Professionals. He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner, a professional accomplishment that denotes proven proficiency in fraud prevention, detection and deterrence. 

“It’s such a great honor to become a Board Member of a great organization that makes such significant differences in so many children’s lives. I’m looking forward to helping BBBSOS in any way that I can help achieve their goal of providing mentor access to all of Rhode Island’s children in need,” said Fontes.

BBBSOS provides mentors to the youth of Rhode Island who will motivate and empower them to make positive decisions, improve academic results, avoid risky behaviors and grow in a way that will positively impact our community.
