Dell and Johnson & Johnson Both Looking to Locate Offices in RI, According to Sources

GoLocal has learned that two major U.S. companies are looking to potentially locate significant offices in the Providence metro area. Multiple sources in economic development have confirmed that Dell and Johnson & Johnson are both looking at Rhode Island.

Dell, who is merging with Hopkington, MA-based data storage giant EMC in the largest tech merger in history, is looking to create a presence in the Providence market. The combined company will employ 140,000 employees globally and will be called Dell Technologies. With the endless decline in the demands for PCs and a lack of profitability, the Dell - EMC deal brings new life to company.

According to economic development sources involved in the potential relocation, Dell is looking for 30,000 plus square feet of office space -- about half the size of the PayPal space needs.

Johnson & Johnson

Beyond Dell and the previously unveiled potential PayPal customer service center, the biggest economic development opportunity for the Capital city may be the location of a Johnson & Johnson group. The healthcare company is the ranked #39 on the Fortune 500 list. “The 130-year old healthcare conglomerate sells everything from baby shampoo to surgical staples and cancer drugs (it also divested itself of Splenda, the artificial sweetener),” wrote Fortune.

Recently, it was reported that PayPal was looking at locating its customer operations center in Rhode Island after the company decided to pullout of North Carolina. One of the sites under consideration is the vacant Superman Building. As GoLocal reported on Wednesday, that space is complicated due to the need to build-out the entire structure's mechanicals.

Call to corporate communications offices at Dell and Johnson & Johnson were not immediately returned.

"We are frequently in dialogue with companies about moving to or expanding within Rhode Island. Out of respect for the companies involved, it's our general practice not to comment on speculation regarding such business' exploratory processes or potential plans (if any)," said Matt Sheaf, spokeman for RI Commerce Corporation in an email to GoLocalProv.com on Wednesday afternoon.
