A downtown Providence restaurant has announced that it is closing.

Kin, located on Washington Street, let people know on social media this week.

After much thought, reflection, and prayer, we have made the bittersweet decision to close the doors of Kin Southern Table + Bar. This chapter has been one filled with incredible memories, laughter, love, and a deep connection to our community.

Kin has always been more than just a restaurant; it’s been a space where we’ve celebrated our culture, shared stories, and brought people together over the comfort of good food. To each of you who supported us—whether you dined with us, attended one of our events, or simply shared kind words—you’ve made an indelible mark on our journey, and for that, we are forever grateful.

Though the restaurant will close, our passion for bringing people together will not. Keep an eye out for potential pop-ups, events, and ways we’ll continue to celebrate and serve our community in the future. Kin isn’t just a space; it’s a spirit that lives on in all of us.

Thank you for being part of our family and for allowing us to serve you. This is not goodbye—it’s “see you soon.”

 

Kin's Story

On its website, Kin's owner Julia Broome shared the restaurant's story

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Broome was laid off from her role as Account Manager for Global Experience Specialists - where she oversaw the planning of domestic and international trade shows, meetings and event programs for clients. It was during that time that she launched her idea for Kin Southern Table and Bar.  

“I knew that I needed to use my free time for good. So I started jotting down what my ideal restaurant would be like. And I thought about how I would like to spend my time with friends and family when the shut down was lifted.”

“I’ve always wanted to own a restaurant. When I was little,  I spent summers playing in my Aunt’s garden, watching my mother and Great-Grandmother cook, and love entertaining family and friends.”

Julia wanted to create an all-inclusive safe space where guests could enjoy the food that she grew up on - her family’s Southern cooking.  She raised money through a Kickstarter campaign and cash in her savings. Just one year after her layoff, Julia and her team opened Kin on March 30, 2021.
