Rhode Island ranks 48th of 51 (all of the states Washington DC) with an average state and local tax price of $7,159 which is a 27% difference from the national average.

The states that are directly behind Rhode Island are Wisconsin at $7,159, Nebraska at $7,298 and Illinois at $7,719 for a 37% difference from the national average. 

The states that are ahead of Rhode Island are Connecticut at $7,115, New York at $7,062 and Michigan at $6,902. 

According to WalletHub, the best state to be a taxpayer in is Alaska, where a taxpayer pays an average of $2,993, good enough for a -47% difference from the national average.  

Rhode Island also has the third highest cigarette excise tax rates, with only Massachusetts and New York ranking worse.
