Brown University Presents "Beethoven and COVID-19" -- Thursday at 8 PM
Portrait of Beethoven by Joseph Karl Stieler, Wikipedia Public DomainBrown University Professor Brian Alverson, MD is partnering with string quartet Brooklyn Rider to present "Beethoven and COVID-19: How his timeless quartet about illness and recovery can support our experience" Thursday night at 8 PM.
Brown University writes:
Toward the very end of his life, Beethoven wrote what many consider to be the greatest movement of music ever written: the third movement of his Opus 132 string quartet. This movement was an autobiographical portrayal of his illness, near death, and recovery. We will discuss the patient experience of loneliness, sadness, and anger when suffering a severe medical illness such as coronavirus, and also when suffering through social isolation, and we will relate these experiences to Beethoven’s great work.
We will enjoy recorded performances by Brooklyn Rider Quartet of sections of the work for educational clarity, and then we will cap the lecture with a full prerecorded performance of the piece. At the end, there will be opportunities to ask questions and speak with Dr. Alverson and members of the Brooklyn Rider about their experience performing this remarkable piece of music.
Brian Alverson, MD is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. He has been practicing hospital-based pediatrics for over two decades. In addition to his medical expertise, Dr. Alverson is an active chamber musician on violin and viola, and is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors for Greenwood Music Camp, the oldest classical music camp for children in the United States.
About Brooklyn Rider
Brooklyn Rider is considered to be one of the leading string quartets in the world, and certainly is one of the most innovative. After numerous collaborative albums with such legendary musicians as Bela Fleck, Martin Hayes, Anne Sofie von Otter, and Joshua Redman, Brooklyn Rider returns to its roots with a recently released album, “Healing Modes.” This album, appropriately, includes a performance of Beethoven’s Op. 132 quartet.
