Cranston Women's Volunteer Organization Holds Membership Drive

The General Federation of Women's Club of Rhode Island will be holding a Meet and Greet Membership Drive in Cranston November 18.

The drive will be held at Corner Bakery in Cranston's Garden City from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to encourage more women to get involved in their communities.

The GFWC of Rhode Island was founded in 1895, and is involved in everything from supporting Operation Stand Down's facilities for female veterans to raising money to purchase books for children at Cranston Family Center.

"Our members give their own time and money to help out other organizations," says Karen Leach, Organizer of the Cranston division of GFWC. "We got 700 books for the children at Cranston Family Center, we collaborated with another agency to get these books for free and paid for the shipping. [GFWC] likes to piggy back off of other organizations and their causes - we like to be an extra set of hands by volunteering."

Cranston's GFWC has also participated in other acts of philanthropy by raising $1,000 for the national project Shot@Life which gives important vaccines - like pneumonia immunization - to children.

Leach's group has also donated fuel gift cards, toiletries and other necessities to the female veterans at the Cpl. Holly A. Charette house who often are unable to live off their stipends alone.

Membership costs $30 annually with other chapters in East Greenwich, Warwick, Pawtucket, Bristol County, South County and Rumford.

For more information contact Karen Leach at 401-254-2611 or [email protected] to learn how you can get involved.

The GFWC Cranston Community Women's Club is located at 22 Francionia Dr., Cranston, RI.
