Fit for Life: “You Should” Read This :)

I have a philosophy that I don’t tell people what they should do unless they ask or pay me. I developed this rule because I gave someone advice they didn’t ask for and was told to “mind my business.”
I always get questions from family and friends like “what should I do to get in better shape” or, “what should I eat?” Therefore, I have the right and responsibility to answer the question.

So, since you are reading this article and didn’t specifically ask me what you should do, or pay for my advice, I’m going to tell you what you “shouldn’t do” in order to get in better shape and improve your health and wellness.
Many of you reading this know that you “should” exercise, and eat healthy food, so you don’t need me to tell you that, but sometimes it’s more effective to explain the things that you shouldn’t be doing, or the things that you need to remove from your life in order to make progress.
1. You shouldn’t stay up too late and lose sleep because you were binge-watching your favorite tv series. Sleep is so important on so many levels that it is foolish to not make it a non-negotiable in your life. When you get a good night’s sleep you are more likely to be more productive the following day. You also regenerate muscle growth and strengthen your immune system when you get adequate sleep. There are too many other benefits to list, so for more info, just google “the benefits of sleep” and you will see for yourself how important it is.
2. You shouldn’t hit the snooze button in the morning. When you do that, you are not only breaking a promise to yourself first thing in the morning, you are starting the day behind, and stressing yourself out. You think you are benefiting yourself, but you are doing more harm than good. Most snooze cycles last 9 minutes, and you are usually adding anxiety for fear of not waking back up. You lie there and fester about all the stress in your day and deprive yourself of quality sleep. If you think setting it earlier than your desired wake up time, so you can get “extra”, you are fooling yourself. You made a promise the night before that you would get up at 6am, so start your day with a win, and get up when the alarm goes off.
3. You shouldn’t forget to drink water and keep yourself hydrated. A general rule is to consume 1/2 your body weight in ounces per day, and not doing so can cause a whole list of problems. Lack of energy, headaches, constipation are just a few, and if you work out, hydrated muscles work and develop much faster than when you lack proper hydration.
4. You shouldn’t forget to meal prep and plan your nutrition for the day. When you just “wing” it you are more likely to eat unfavorable foods. If you don’t plan, chances are you will get hungrier throughout the day, and when you are hungry, you make bad choices. Pack your food or plan a healthy place to eat early in the day, so you can get the proper nutrition into your body throughout the day.
5. You shouldn’t miss your workouts, because when your workout, you not only burn calories and build strong muscles, you become more energized throughout the day. There will never be a time that you regret getting a workout in, so create the time in your schedule, and make yourself a priority. You will be glad you did.
6. You shouldn’t eat anything from a drive-thru window from a fast-food chain restaurant. Most chain restaurants claim to have healthy items; however, it is mass-produced garbage that will leave you feeling fat, bloated, and lethargic throughout the day. This will likely be the case if you don’t follow #4.
So, there are a few things you can do to help you accelerate your health and fitness to the next level. Again, most people know what they “should” be doing, so when you concentrate on what you “shouldn’t” do or find things that cause a negative effect and remove them from your lifestyle, it can be just as beneficial.
