Julie Lynn Cardinal Foundation Donating Funds to Boulder Shooting Victims' Families in Her Memory

The family foundation of Julie Lynn Cardinal -- who was killed by a gunman in Westerly in 2019 -- has announced it is donating funds to families of the Boulder, Colorado mass shooting this week.

Ten people were killed at the King Soopers supermarket, including a police officer.

Law-enforcement officials said the 21-year-old suspect, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, had been armed with a handgun and military-style semiautomatic rifle and was wearing an armored vest when he carried out the attacks.

"By unanimous vote, our [Board of Directors], consisting of Morgan Bettencourt, Tracy Cardinal, and myself, daughter, sister and Mother of Julie Lynn Cardinal, have agreed to reach out and donate funds to the victims' families who should not have had to face this devastating loss like our family has due to flaws in gun permitting procedures," wrote Julie Lynn Cardinal's mother Holly on Facebook.

"I pray this Foundation can help make a small difference in awareness to a system gone wrong," she added. "God Bless the victims, their families, their friends and their community."

Last summer, the Rhode Island General Assembly approved the Julie Lynn Cardinal Act, which requires gun dealers to notify the police in a gun buyer's hometown about the purchase.

The man who fatally shot Cardinal in a Westerly apartment complex in 2019 had a long history with his local police department -- but purchased a gun in another municipality.

"The foundation is excited about our fundraisers that we have planned for this coming year, as covid was a wrench in our plans this last year," Cardinal's daughter Morgan told GoLocal. "The Cardinal family and foundation hope that the victims of this tragedy find peace in how their community, and country, have supported them throughout this process. We understand the feeling and pray for them throughout their healing process."
