Amos House Social Worker Suspended by State for Sexual Relationship With Patient

The Rhode Island Department of Health has suspended the license of licensed clinical social worker Laura M. Harris for six months.

 

According to RIDOH documents secured by GoLocal:

Beginning in or about January 2025, while employed as a licensed clinical social worker at Amos House, in Providence, Harris engaged in a sexual and romantic relationship with an individual ("Client A") who was a client at Amos House.

 

At all relevant times, Harris facilitated group sessions in which Client A was a participant.

 

Said relationship between Harris and Client A continued for several months.

 

The conduct described … constitutes unprofessional conduct pursuant to R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 5-39.1-10(1) ("engaging "in the practice of social work in a manner harmful or dangerous to a client"), and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics …

 

Further, RIDOH wrote, Said conduct violated R.I. Gen. Laws§ 5-39.1-10(13) (prohibiting violations of"the provisions of any code of ethics adopted by the Board") by violating the standards set forth in the NASW Code of Ethics, which prohibit social workers from engaging in sexual activities or sexual relationships with cwTent or former clients (Standard l.09(a)-(b), prohibit conflicts of interest and dual relationships with clients or former clients (Standard l.06(a)-(c)), and require a commitment to clients' well-being (Standard 1.01 ).

 

 

Harris is suspended for a minimum of six months.
