A healthcare training program in Rhode Island has been “summarily suspended” by the Department of Health for a number of violations.

This week, RIDOH suspended Ace Training School in Cranston, which has been a licensed nursing assistant training program since 2022, following a complaint.

RIDOH in its summary suspension said the violations found constituted a "risk to the public."

About Investigation

On April 22, RIDOH said it conducted an “unannounced site visit” to ACE at 815 Reservoir Avenue after being told “the program coordinator was a nursing assistant” and “students were not completing the required clinical hours.”

According to RIDOH, the site visit revealed that the program coordinator at ACE was a nursing assistant and thus ACE is in violation of regulation which requires the program coordinator at a licensed nursing assistant training program to be a registered nurse with a minimum of two years of nursing experience, one of which must be in the provision of long term care services; and must have documented evidence of teaching and/or appropriate supervisory experience.

RIDOH said that ACE did not have a detailed course curriculum and was in violation of regulation requiring that a nursing assistant training program to have a detailed course curriculum.

Additional Findings

RIDOH said that ACE could not demonstrate that it had the service resources to provide its students with the minimal practical experience in a clinical setting - an additional regulation violation - and that “students attending this nursing assistant training program training school are not receiving the levels of training and education required in accordance with R.I. Gen. Laws § 23-17.9-1 et seq. and 216 RICR-40-05-22.”

“Permitting ACE to continue to provide substandard training to its students presents a risk of harm to the public,” said RIDOH in its summary suspension of the school’s license.

“Pursuant to R.I. Gen. Laws § 42-35-14(c), Respondent's nursing assistant training program license is SUSPENDED until further order of the Rhode Island Department of Health. Proceedings for revocation or other action shall be promptly instituted and determined,” said RIDOH.

ACE did not respond to request for comment at time of publication.
