CVS and Walgreens announced on Friday that they will begin dispensing mifepristone, known as the abortion pill.

The pills will be available in the coming weeks, according to the companies.

The two pharmacy chains said they received certification to dispense the pills, following a regulatory change by the FDA in 2023, which now allows brick-and-mortar pharmacies to offer the pill with a prescription.

CVS will begin dispensing in all of its pharmacies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island “in the weeks ahead,” Amy Thibault, a spokeswoman for the company, told the New York Times.

CVS is headquartered in Woonsocket, RI.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "The companies said they would distribute the pill in a way consistent with state laws—meaning it won’t be offered in states that don’t allow legal access to abortion through 10 weeks—and will begin rolling out the pill in a handful of states. Both said they wouldn’t make mifepristone available via mail order. The drug is already available via other mail-order pharmacies and telehealth platforms."
