Delayed Federal Funding for Washington Bridge to Be Released

After months of delays, the state of Rhode Island announced that it has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to release the $220.9 million Mega-INFRA grants to support the Washington Bridge reconstruction.

The state claims the agreement will lock in USDO funding for the project, and that it has begun to draw down funds to support pre-construction activities for the rebuild.

The grant had been awarded under the Biden administration, but the Trump administration delayed the release of the funds.

“With this signing, the $220 million in federal grant funding for the new Washington Bridge has been assured,” said Governor Dan McKee.

The McKee Administration has failed to meet any of its deadlines since the bridge failed in December of 2023.

The first time the project was bid, no firms bid on the project.

McKee claimed at a press conference a year ago that the project would cost between $250 and $300 million and that the new bridge was expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.

McKee also said that a replacement bridge would be completed between March and September of 2026. That, of course, was also a false claim.
