Endorsements for 2022 Primary Election

PHOTO: GoLocal
On Sunday, GoLocal will publish its first round of endorsements in this year’s Rhode Island primary election.

As the state’s only locally owned statewide news organization, we believe that it’s important to offer voters in-depth analyses of the candidates.

A GoLocal endorsement is that of the ownership of our publication and is completely separate from our news-reporting function.

This year, in our first time offering endorsements, we have taken the extraordinary step of not accepting any political advertising during this campaign cycle.

This is a significant financial sacrifice, but we believe that it’s important for maintaining the credibility and rigor of our endorsements.

Interviews were conducted by:

- Robert Whitcomb: GoLocal columnist and former long-time editorial-page editor for The Providence Journal. He also served as the financial editor of the International Herald Tribune, based in Paris, and as an editor at The Wall Street Journal, among many other publishing jobs.

- Kate Nagle: GoLocal news editor. She previously worked in public and government relations and as a staffer on Capitol Hill.

- Josh Fenton: CEO and co-founder of GoLocal. He previously worked for two U.S. Senators, three Governors and was elected to the Providence City Council. He has worked in the private sector for the past 25 years.

To be considered for an endorsement, candidates needed to agree to a personal interview.

GoLocal will be making endorsements for the following offices:

Governor

Lt. Governor

Secretary of State

General Treasurer

Attorney General

Mayor of Providence

These endorsements are only for the primaries. Also, note that the winner of the Democratic primary for Providence mayor will have no opponent in the general election.

“We believe this was an important way to pierce the sound bites and the campaign speak. It was an opportunity to hear candidates' views and challenge claims they made,” said Fenton.

“Our hope is that this is a valuable tool for Rhode Islanders — a data point in their consideration. And, we appreciate the candidates taking the time and allowing us the opportunity to ask very direct questions,” Fenton added.
