Friday Night Shooting: Police Name Man Who Drove at Officers - Detective Shot at Suspect Twice

Providence police have released the identity of the officer — as well as the suspect being charged — involved in the shooting incident Friday night on the East Side of Providence. 

Statement by Providence Police 

"On January 28, 2022, at approximately 10:30 PM,  Providence Police responded to a home on Hope Street for a breaking and entering in progress.

Upon arrival, police observed the suspect, Kyle Bento, age 48, enter into a vehicle and proceed to drive at a high rate of speed out of the parking lot. 

Bento continued to drive in a reckless manner towards police and at that time Detective David Harrington fired two rounds at the suspect vehicle. 

Bento was then apprehended approximately a block away and charged by Providence Police Detectives with burglary, possession of burglary tools, felony assault, driving without a license, and further charges are pending.  Bento is being held at the ACI.

No injuries occurred and, per protocol, this incident is under review by the Providence Police Department, the Office of the RI Attorney General and the Rhode Island State Police.

Providence Police will hold a media briefing related to this incident next week and no further information is available at this time."

Editor's Note: Kyle Bento, is 48 years of age. Providence police originally identified Bento as 28 years old.
