East Side Airbnb Party Over Weekend Latest to Have Ties to Gangs, Say Police

The Airbnb party on the East Side over the weekend in which police found blood, guns, and knives had ties to gangs, as well as some of the attendees having links to the worst shooting in the city's history, according to Providence police.

On Saturday night, police reported encountering nearly two dozen people partying at 216 Brown Street. The home is located across from a park and a school. Police made several arrests.

The property is owned by Bruce Ackman and Lynn Iler. Ackman is a tech executive and Iler is a dermatologist.

The couple posts the property on both VRBO and Airbnb for short-term rentals. The first two floors are one unit and the third floor is a second rental unit, according to their listings; the city of Providence zoning board lists the address as a single-family dwelling.

This is not the only property on Providence’s East Side being rented out for short-term rentals which are then turned into party houses that erupt into violence.

In a separate incident last January, just blocks away on George Street, a similar incident occurred.

Gang Ties

On Monday, Providence Police Major David Lapatin told GoLocal that several of the Airbnb party attendees at this weekend’s event are gang members.

“Some of the individuals [at the party Saturday night] are known to be affiliated with gangs,” said Lapatin.

Police reported that they patted down the subjects at the scene, and found a gun with an obliterated serial number on Edwin Torres, age 24.

On Monday, police confirmed Torres was one of the individuals critically injured on May 13, 2021, in the shooting on Carolina Avenue that Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements called the worst in the city’s history.

“It’s the same [Edwin] Torres,” Lapatin told GoLocal.

And on Saturday at the Airbnb party, police said they also found another gun in the sofa cushions next to Izayah Carides, age 23.

Carides was released pending further investigation.

David Carides and Daniel Carides were arrested in conjunction with the Carolina Avenue shooting.

“[Izayah] Carides is related to them,” Lapatin told GoLocal.

The George Street Airbnb incident in 2021 involved different gang members.
