George Wiley Center Encourages Community to Speak Out Against National Grid

The George Wiley Center is encouraging community members to speak out against National Grid’s proposed rate hikes.

The center is inviting the community to a public hearing at Pawtucket City Hall on Thursday, February 15 at 6 p.m.

“While National Grid, a British-based multinational corporation, makes billions in profit each year, over 20,000 Rhode Island households are imposed with utility shut-offs due to unaffordable bills. (In 2017 National Grid imposed 18,551 electric utility terminations and 8,518 gas utility terminations in Rhode Island.) Many more Rhode Islanders struggle to afford the basic need of utility service,” the center writes in their press release.

During the hearing, community members will be speaking out about issues such as unaffordable bills, stopping the shut-off crisis in Rhode Island, the need for a PIPP (Percentage Income Payment Plan) to make utilities affordable for low-income households, the need for National Grid to open a physical customer service office, and other issues related to utility access.

Upcomings Hearings

The public hearing in Pawtucket is one of a series of statewide hearings being held on Thursdays at 6pm over the next five weeks, including Newport (Feb. 8th, 6pm, Newport City Hall), Pawtucket (Feb. 15th, 6pm, Pawtucket City Hall), Richmond (Feb. 22nd, 6pm, Richmond Town Hall), Providence (March 1st, 6pm, Hope High School cafeteria), Narragansett (March 8th, 6pm, Narragansett Town Hall), and Warwick (March 15th, 6pm, Public Utilities Commission).
