GoLocal Statewide Poll - Complete Results, Conducted by Harvard's Della Volpe

John Della Volpe
A deadlocked Governor's race, little support for public financing of the PawSox stadium, and optimism about Rhode Island’s future are some of the learning from a new statewide poll conducted by John Della Volpe of Harvard for GoLocal.

On Thursday, Della Volpe joined GoLocal News Director Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE to unveil the poll that measures how Rhode Islanders feel about everything from who they want to be their next governor to what voters identify is the most important issue facing the state.

“Across the country, Americans are losing faith in the public institutions that govern us.  In Rhode Island, the problem is acute and it impacts everything from the state of the economy to the state of discourse in coffee shops throughout the state.  Sixty-three percent of likely voters believe there is more political corruption in Rhode Island than other states -- only 7% say that other states have it worse.  Those who are older, and arguably wiser and with more experience, are more likely than younger voters to subscribe to these views,” said Della Volpe.

Della Volpe, who is Director of Polling at Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics, outlined many other key issues facing Rhode Island, including:

The funding for the proposed new stadium for the PawSox
The proposed 46-story Fane Tower in Providence
The United States Senate race match-ups
The proposed $250 million bond issue to improve schools around the state
The poll also explores how Rhode Islanders feel about the direction of the state and are they optimistic or pessimistic about the future.

Relative to the hotly contested Governor’s race Della Volpe said, “As of this moment, the fact that a majority of Rhode Islanders are optimistic about the state's future is not paying a lot of dividends for the Governor.  Only half of those who are optimistic support her in a match-up against Fung and Trillo, 19% are undecided.”

The poll found that Governor Raimondo is tied with Cranston Mayor Allan Fung — both with 33 percent. Independent Joe Trillo has tapped the core vote for President Donald Trump and is registering 16 percent.

In October 2017, GoLocal in conjunction with Della Volpe’s firm Socialsphere, unveiled a poll that made statewide news on a number of fronts including unveiling insights into the support for the PawSox proposal and how Rhode Islanders feel about top RI elected officials.

Socialsphere has conducted research for the United State Marine Corps, Politico, the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox and numerous other businesses and governmental entities.

“It is important that Rhode Islanders receive independent polling data, not just spins from the campaigns or partisan political consultants. We are pleased to again partner with one of the best pollsters in America to bring folks the highest quality data,” said Josh Fenton, CEO and co-founder of GoLocal24.
