GoLocal Statewide Poll: Rhode Islanders Split on Proposed Fane Tower

46-story Fane Tower
One of the largest projects ever proposed to be built in Providence is getting a mixed reaction from Rhode Island voters, and that may be good news for the project. Historically, Rhode Islanders have been slow to warm to projects like the expansion of T.F. Green or the development of Providence Place Mall. Both projects initially had low numbers for public support.

GoLocal released the latest statewide polling from Harvard pollster John Della Volpe on Thursday.

“As things stand, 39% favor development of the Hope Point Tower, and 50% oppose the project when it was described as a 46-story luxury residence tower in Providence that would be 170-feet taller than the Superman building,” said Della Volpe.

“This is an issue that stands watching -- I would label more than half of the support and about half of the opposition as 'soft.' Public opinion could easily evolve over time as more information about the tower and its impact on the taxpayers, the city and state economy, skyline and housing is known,” Della Volpe added.

The poll question:

The City of Providence and the state of Rhode Island are considering a proposal by New York developer Jason Fane to build a 46-story luxury residential tower in Providence, next to a public riverfront park.

The developer will invest $250 to $300 million of his own funds.  The project is called the Hope Point Tower, it would be 170-feet taller than the Superman building and would require waiving height restrictions and the use of state tax credits.
