GoLocal Statewide Poll: $250 Million School Bond Has Strong Support

Rhode Islanders strongly support Governor Gina Raimondo’s proposed $250 million bond issue to improve and upgrade public schools, according to a poll released on Thursday.

The poll was conducted by Harvard’s John Della Volpe in partnership with GoLocal. The poll found that registered Rhode Island voters strongly support the investment.

While appearing on GoLocal LIVE on Thursday Della Volpe told GoLocal’s News Editor Kate Nagle that Rhode Islanders have a long history of supporting bond issues -- juxtaposing the school construction bond support with the opposition to taxpayer backing for a new PawSox ballpark. 

“Rhode Islanders have always been committed to investing large sums of money on things that provide infrastructure, provide access to education [and] provide, essentially, improved quality of life for all Rhode Islanders," said Della Volpe. "You know, 70 to 74% is incredibly high, you have get significant majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents."

According to the poll:

If there was an election today, would you vote to approve or reject issuing $250 million in financing supported general obligation bonds to repair Rhode Island's deteriorating school buildings and bring them up to minimum standards called "warm, safe and dry"?

Net: Approve             74%

Definitely approve    36%

Probably approve     38%

Net: Reject                17%

Probably reject           9%

Definitely reject          7%


Don't know      9%
