About Incident
Shortly after 3 PM on Friday afternoon, police responded to the Macy’s store at Providence Place Mall for a report of an assault.
Police said they were informed that a man in possession of a duffel bag containing store merchandise lunged at security guards with a knife.
According to police, they met with private mall security who said they knew the suspect and recognized him when he entered the store.
Security told police they observed the suspect putting merchandise in the duffel bag and went to confront him, at which time he threatened multiple security officers with a knife before fleeing the store.
Police say a description of the suspect was then broadcast over all channels and a man matching the description was located a short while later on Broad Street.
The suspect — later identified as Wilson Wooley, age 26 — was found to be in possession of merchandise from Macy’s along with a knife and arrested, according to police.
Police say the knife was seized and the items were returned to Macy’s.
Wooley was arrested on shoplifting charges and is now facing further charges stemming from the incident.
