"Mayor Grebien's Friends Gets $3.6M, But Our Neighborhood Gets Nothing," Khrystyne Bento

Since we are forced to give our tax money to "friends of the Mayor" via the $3.6 million in tax credits recently approved by Governor Gina Raimondo and Commerce RI -  I want to know what's in it for our community?

What's in it for the district in which that building is located? What's in it for the many youth that have no type of afterschool activities? Residents have no place to park within five blocks of that building. All I see out of the millions being funneled to a California developer is that the surrounding community getting out of this deal is a hassle.

That huge building is for a for-profit developer, but not for the community.

What has has this developer given back to the community in which it takes from? Outsiders get to rent space. Adults get to party and eat, for a price. Farmers markets get to sell over-priced produce in the middle of a low-income neighborhood. Cars get free parking at the cost of local residents. The poor homeowners who shovel snow in the winter, come home to find cars from the establishment parked in their spaces.

I question the Mayor's motivation

I question the Mayor's motivation, he can't imagine he hooks them all up for nothing. Rich get richer, yet what are the kids getting out of it?

There are no community centers fully operational in the neighborhood, no space big enough to accommodate indoor activities to get kids off streets, no community services that are desperately needed here in Pawtucket. No summertime activities free for kids. No food bank for starving families in that neighborhood. No affordable units, no jobs available for locals.

The city requested $50,000 of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money for construction to be done to another building to house Launch Code, a program being plugged by the Governor Raimondo and Mayor Grebien.

After months of discussion about why Launch Code would not be beneficial to that particular center in Pawtucket, the program deciding to go to URI, but then all of a sudden Launch Code is back is going into the Hope Artiste Village building.  I'm not convinced that it was another secret agenda, to secure funding, using a camouflage only to use the funding elsewhere, after it's been approved.  Will the California developer be getting the $50,000 CDBG funding also?

It is no wonder some of the few small businesses that went into that building, started to do well and all of a sudden closed down. It is all making sense now. Two of the minority business owners that have gone in, remodeled the space, and then got left hung out to dry. The developer Lance Robbins threatens to bankrupt anyone who gets on his bad side. More of the same bullying mentality used by our city hall. I'm not at all surprised.

Five million being requested in funding for a dome on city hall and now $3.6 million on an entertainment venue/fancy living.

That's more than eight million that could provide services to every single student with afterschool programs, tutoring, summer camp, and a jobs for young adults year round for years. The spending in this city is ridiculous. Why should anyone be paying car tax if they can't park their cars anywhere near their homes?

Excuse me, but what exactly does California developer Robbins need $3.6 million for? Unless he will dedicate some of that massive space for improvements to people in that neighborhood, not only should he not get their hard earned money, he should go elsewhere with his annoying ideas.  Why would he, when the politicians are treating him better than the taxpayers, voters, and residents in which they "serve."

I disagree when I read statements made about Governor Raimondo that she caters to women and minorities. The majority of the minorities here in Pawtucket are completely ignored and dismissed, while she and the Mayor help give to everyone, but the real community.

The majority minority in this city who also make up a huge percentage in the same district as Hope Village, but don't get fair treatment by police and suffer from lack of understanding of cultural differences in school system. There is a lack of jobs in the neighborhoods in which those mills use to provide to thousands in that area. There are no language support in the department of human services which leads to them being declined needed services unless they speak English or Spanish.

Maybe the Mayor wants to use Hope Artiste to distract from the real issues being ignored here.
