MLK Commission Sets Annual Celebration, Recognition Program

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration of the life, and death, of the civil rights leader will be held on Monday, January 19, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Providence.      

The event, open to the public, will include remarks by commission members, state and religious leaders, and a number of musical presentations. State Rep. Raymond A. Hull, who chairs the MLK State Holiday Commission that annually organizes and hosts the celebration, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Sen. Harold M. Metts will lead the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge of Non-Violence.

Governor Gina Raimondo is expected to attend, along with Senator Jack Reed, Congressman James R. Langevin, Congressman David Cicilline, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nicholas A. Mattiello, Providence School Superintendent Susan Lusi, state Representatives and Senators as well as other elected and appointed officials. 

There will also be musical presentations by the Lillian Feinstein Elementary School Chorus and the RPM Voices of Rhode Island. 

The annual MLK Day celebration is one of several major events conducted under the auspices of the State Holiday Commission, which was formed by the General Assembly to commemorate the day and also to promote educational efforts throughout the year.  MLK Commission members include Representative Hull, Chairman; Hon. Maxine B. Shavers; Vice Chair Jo Eva Gaines; Sen. Juan M. Pichardo; Senator Metts; Randall Rosenbaum; Reverend Balark; Onna Moniz John; Hon. J. Clement
Cicilline; George Garedo; Rep. Joseph S. Almeida; Norman Lincoln; Doris de los Santos; Frank Walker III; Dr. Marion Orr, and Antonio Mayberry.
