NEW: Gas Prices Finally Stabilize in Rhode Island

Gas prices in Rhode Island seem to have reached their peak … at least for the time being.

For the first time since the middle of January, AAA Southern New England’s annual index of the average price per gallon failed to see a week-to-week increase as the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Rhode Island averaged $3.799 over the last seven days, a slight decrease of three cents from last week’s high of $3.829.

The decrease stopped what was a six-week streak of rising prices in the Ocean State, where drivers were paying $3.519 on January 21 and a whopping 31 cents more just 42 days later.

Rhode Island’s $3.799 average price per gallon is five cents higher than the national average of $3.749, however, and is one cent lower than it was at this point last year when prices were, on average, $3.80. AAA said it found a range in prices of 24 cents this week, with the lowest reported price $3.679 and the highest $3.919.

Prices also decreased for higher-grade gasoline as Rhode Island drivers are now paying an average of $3.969 for midgrade, down three cents since last week, and respective prices of $4.089 for premium and $4.189 for diesel.
