A man drowned in a swimming pool at The Last Resort, a bar and restaurant in Smithfield, GoLocal has learned.

GoLocal spoke with Woonsocket resident Pamela Ross, who said she saw the incident take place on Thursday evening.

"I was there with my wife and friends," said Ross, who says it was around 5 PM. "There was a lifeguard there, but it looked like he was in plain clothes up on the stage, where the music is."

Ross said that she overheard a server say "there looked like a black towel at the bottom of the deep end."

"My brother told people — and then people went down and pulled him [the victim] out of the pool," said Ross. "Luckily there was a nurse who happened to be there, who started chest compressions."

Ross said she did not see the lifeguard do chest compressions.

"It felt like it took a while for rescue to arrive; when they did, they did chest compressions, but by that time he had died," said Ross.

Ross said she only knew the victim was there with his brother, and that they are of Senegalese background -- and that he didn't know how to swim.

"There wasn't any splashing or anything anyone noticed," she said. "I heard he could have been at the edge of the shallow end beforehand."

"It was so unfortunate," said Ross. "Everyone was standing around in shock."
