Protestors disrupted the Democratic Unity rally held at the Roger Williams Park Casino on Monday night.
The event featured top Rhode Island Democrats, including U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.
The protest of the Democratic Party event was dubbed as a "Unite Against Genocide" protest.
Photographer Richard McCaffrey was at the event and captured when the protestor entered the event and disrupted Whitehouse’s speech. Police then removed the protestors without incident.
The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace - Rhode Island and other pro-Palestine groups.
“Over the past year, it has been abundantly clear that Americans, and especially Democratic voters and the people of Rhode Island, want to see the United States take action to stop the ongoing and escalating genocide in Gaza,” said Johanna Ray Vollhardt, professor of social psychology at Clark University and a Providence East Side resident.
“With the Israeli government and military’s escalations in the past weeks - the bombings in Beirut, the complete siege of Jabalia and North Gaza increases in government-sanctioned settler violence in the West Bank – we need our congressional members, especially our Senators, to take action.” – Jackie Goldman, a candidate for the Providence City Council in 2022.
