Providence Police: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

It's no secret that Providence has an underbelly of adult entertainment -- and services -- that used to be relegated to the inserts and back pages of publications.  It's the latter which provided the namesake for Operation Backpage, which addressed the issue of prostitution.

The effort started under the the direction of Mayor Elorza and Public Safety Commissioner Pare in April to address users of the website for services that are not legal.

Providence Police have arrested 22 men in the undercover sting called “Operation Backpage,” it was announced Friday afternoon at a press conference by Mayor Jorge Elorza, Commissioner Steven Paré, Colonel Hugh Clements, and Peg Langhammer, Executive Director of Day One. More arrests followed -- and scrutiny of the media.

Some may argue that the city has "bigger fish to fry," but Joanne Giannini wrote for GoLocal, "Women and young girls are being advertised on this website to advertise for "escort services" which really are services of sex trafficking and prostitution. This has proven to be deadly as we have already seen in the murder this week of Ashley Masi.  Police Chief Hugh Clements commented about the female victims  "They aren't necessarily women. Many, many are kids."
